PHOENIX ? Arizona's unemployment rate dropped to 8.7 percent in November as retailers added more seasonal jobs than normal and government also added employees.
The three-tenths of a percentage point drop reported Thursday by the state Department of Administration showed Arizona employers added 10,200 nonfarm jobs last month. More than 80 percent were in the private sector.
The drop is another sign that the state's economy is slowly improving. But the report also shows that the number of added jobs was below the 10-year average for the month.
The trade, transportation and utilities sector saw the most job gains, with retailers leading the way by adding 12,800 jobs. The 10-year retail average for November is 9,800 jobs added, an indication the sector expects robust sales. Government added 2,000 jobs, most in education.
