95% The Kid with a Bike

All Critics (75) | Top Critics (22) | Fresh (70) | Rotten (4)

Without diminishing the boy's intensity or making him in any way ingratiating, the Dardennes take us into his mind, and we begin to appreciate not only his predicament but his resiliency.

The Dardennes' latest is one of their best, a memorable cinematic portrait of troubled youth and soul-saving charity.

Young Thomas Doret fills the role with natural sincerity and focus, and not a second that seems contrived.

Makes a powerful statement about the plight of unwanted children. But it also incorporates elements of melodrama, film noir, and even the fairy tale that engage our empathy and confirm the Dardennes' great compassion.

A wonderfully human and humane story about one of those lost-and-found children who tend to slip through society's not-so-safe safety nets.

Within its tight 87 minutes, not a lot happens, unless you count the saving of a life.

A film of rosy optimism it features a beguiling performance from screen newcomer doret who achieves a wonderfully natural, touching chemistry with de France.

Beyond Samantha's hard-to-fathom loyalty, many of the plot twists are predictable and contrived.

You wouldn't exactly call The Kid With a Bike a feel-good movie, but by the end it certainly invites the viewer to be hopeful about human nature. Another gem from the boys.

Dardenne heroes are crafty and restless, down but not out, and Cyril ought to be one of their best. For whatever reason, he isn't, quite.

Compassionate, humane but never sentimental.

Simple grace is a quality rarer in modern films than one might expect, as is the yard-by-yard, in-the-trenches slog of messy human connection, absent a lot of cathartic speechifying. Both are on rich display here.

The Dardenne siblings keep the story moving at a cracking pace, scrupulously avoid any syrupy sentiment, and deliver a drama that's both emotionally wrenching and morally complex.

An organically unfolding plot and riveting performances make this Cannes prize winner searing and sad.

...never soft-pedals the treacherous byways and alternative routes that [protagonist] Cyril only narrowly avoids on his road to security and happiness.

The Kid With A Bike cuts to the humanist heart of a boy's troubled 'rite de passage', without ever resorting to exaggerated emoting or cheap sensationalism.

Belgian writer/director/producers Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne capture with heartfelt verisimilitude a boy's misplaced determination to find a father figure.

Raw but compassionate, naturalistic but compelling. If you're looking to get into the Dardennes, this is a great place to start.

Their central characters are flawed, and often do awful things, but the Dardennnes' world view is entirely practical.

A tragic figure in the person of an eleven year old, but a boy who never gives up.

A richly textured and human drama brimming with warmth, tenderness and pure, unadulterated poignancy.

Old Homestead Is Where the Heart Is | Food & Drink | Atlantic City ...

The last original restaurant to debut with the Borgata in 2004, Old Homestead Steak House was named Atlantic City?s top restaurant in Zagat?s 2012 America?s Top Restaurants guide.?

As the final remaining, ?original restaurant property at the Borgata, Old Homestead Steak House maintains a special status among peers.?

When opened nearly a decade ago, Borgata pretty much redefined everything we had come to think about casino dining. Executive chef Romeo DiBona, the only person to ever oversee the kitchen here, explains Old Homestead?s unique philosophy.?

?We have think-tanks ? myself, [owners] Marc and Greg Sherry, [general manager] Brian Palin and sous chefs Amador Campos and Luis Rivera. We go over things ? menu items, presentations.??

Since opening, name-brand chefs such as Wolfgang Puck and Bobby Flay have also come to inhabit the sprawling facility. But Old Homestead, which may also claim the distinction of being New York City?s most tenured steak house ? existing since 1868 in the same location ? has always managed to stand out.?

Part of that certainly comes from decades of experience. Another crucial element is their extraordinary selectivity. Prime beef, typically accounting for less than 10 percent of all produced, just isn?t good enough for Old Homestead. In fact, they are noted for rejecting anything that isn?t the top two or so percent of all graded beef.?

The dining space, with plenty of wood tones and multiple levels, is equally special. Our meal began with bang-bang shrimp, two colossal-size decapods. Lightly tempura-battered the duo tilted together, like bosom buddies leaning against each other after a long night of carousing. The huge shrimp ? each hand-sized ? were perfectly prepared, no small feat in and of itself. Exteriors remained crisp and revealed a plethora of sweet white meat within. Finished by pickled cucumbers, chipotle mayo and an ancho chile sauce, the garnishes nicely added to the lure of that magnificent seafood.?

As a middle course, we selected a recent addition to the bill of fare: Kitchen Sink Salad (with a name like that, did you really think we could skip it?). Mixed greens blended with ? deep breath ? thinly sliced strips of salami, hearts of palm in small discs, chunky avocado, halved artichoke hearts, diced red onion, cherry tomatoes, strips of red pepper and lots of unami-inducing bleu cheese. A light, unobtrusive champagne mustard vinaigrette provided acid and moisture to this mega-mix. It reminded us of a lovely Sunday summer brunch you might enjoy at an Italian?s home.?

It was light in texture and still provided plenty of oomph in the flavor department. Throw in a loaf of crusty bread and this wonderful conglomeration would easily become a meal.?

My dining partner opted for wild salmon as her entr?e. The thick filet, probably 10 ounces, was cut to match the rest of the prolific portions. Mounted atop saut?ed Chinese mustard greens, the fish was seared to a nice medium. Glazed with miso and topped by spicy sesame seeds, the pale pink protein was finished with a toss of crisp lotus chips.?

I don?t often order prime rib, typically preferring cuts like New York strip or rib eye. On this evening, I was glad to have made an exception. Described by our server as weighing in at 32 ounces, their Empire Cut was over a foot in length and packed with the ?wow? factor.?

Deeply pink, just as ordered, it possessed a degree of tenderness comparable to quality veal. But its flavor profile, big and bold, was entirely different. Slowly roasted, the rich layers of marbled fat had broken down, creating a luscious mouth feel as well.?

I paired this classic with two steakhouse favorites ? asparagus with Hollandaise and tater tots. The asparagus, ideally in tune with the early spring we?re enjoying, was offered either grilled or steamed. We opted for the former, and delighted in one of the very best versions of ?mother sauce? Hollandaise we?ve ever sampled, warm, viscous and eggy.?

    1. I have a disability which causes me to make use of a service dog. My disability is not life threatening and my parents do not believe in paying in to health insurance or Western medicine. Therefore, I have never seen a doctor regarding my disability. I recently moved in to a condominium that is part of a condo association. They are requiring that I provide a written verification from a medical professional in order to have my animal on the premises. I read a quote online from the Fair Housing Amendments Act that stated that written verification need not be from a medical professional but can be from a reliable third party that is informed about my disability. Can you please let me know if a third party verification complies with the law and maybe provide some advice on how to proceed with my condo association?
Thank you so much for your help.

You would have a hard time arguing that your parents are informed about your disability given they have never sent you to a doctor. Is there a reason you cannot see one now and get the documentation that way?

Adding 1K+ Members/Day, Behance Drops Major Redesign To Make ?The Creative Graph? A Reality

Net3_02While the Web today is chock full of creative expression of every stripe, and digital media has given voice to a whole new class of amateur creatives, be they musicians, artists, or photographers, creative professionals on the other hand have long been underrepresented in the digital world. Yet, as web technologies and their distribution channels mature, diversify, and become easier to use, business opportunities for creative professionals have finally started to outpace both friction and cost. Today, creatives are building careers as freelancers or small business owners with much greater success online. Behance launched in 2006 amidst this changing landscape with the goal of finally providing creative professionals a legitimate, professional platform on which to showcase their talents and regain control over their work. Yet, when it comes to exposure, attribution, and discovery, there's still too much friction for creatives looking to do business online -- even inside Behance. Which is why, over the last nine months, the Behance team has been working on a major redesign that aims to significantly increase the transparency and efficiency of its platform as well as the discoverability of its creatives. And today that redesign finally went live.

Trousers with attitude show resistance is futile

    Paul Marks, senior technology correspondent

    1st-pic-06-Compass.jpg

    Compass by Lawrence Malstaf

I am wearing cyborg trousers. And they are angry, totalitarian trousers. When they sense that I?m walking in forbidden zones, or I dare to approach another human being, a motor-driven weight swings violently around my waist, stopping suddenly to force me off balance, to cajole me into walking in another direction. I can fight it - but the weight shift produces a powerful and uncomfortable wrenching force. It?s much easier not to resist.

Titled Compass, this wearable robotic ?orientation device? is one of the interactive exhibits at Robots and Avatars, an exhibition at the Foundation for Art and Creative Technology (FACT) in Liverpool, Merseyside. Along with London design company Body>Data>Space and Slovenian art collective Kibla, FACT has put together a show revealing some of the ways robots and on-screen avatars could change our lives, as the borders between our physical and virtual lives begin to blur.

The work of Belgium-based artist Lawrence Malstaf, Compass looks peculiar, like an inside-out car wheel; the alloy wheel rim is on the outside and a tyre?s inner tube lines its interior. I stepped inside it and hoisted it up to waist height, whereupon Malstaf?s colleague Tom Kok switched on a pump, inflating the inner tube so that it fitted me tightly. With a couple of supporting braces fastened over my shoulders I was ready to go.

I felt like I was wearing a wrap-around version of a cinema ice cream vendor?s tray. Resting my forearms in two half drainpipes handily provided to protect the wearer's limbs from the weights whizzing around the wheel rim, I pressed the start button and began to wander around a dark, square room. Malstaf has placed magnetic-field-generating coils beneath some of the carpet tiles, which produce ?forbidden zones? that Compass senses, and interprets as off limits to me. In addition, infrared sensors tell the device when I try to associate with humans - something else that?s off limits. When I transgress its rules, it tries to throw me of course with haptic compulsion. After a while I get the message and by tentatively exploring the space I?m in, I learn from the robot?s responses how to use it without hassle.

Crude though it is, it was intriguing to have a robotic technology attempt to control me in this way. With location-aware technology proliferating, could something like this, in an offender-monitoring tag or anklet, one day make life difficult for criminals? And why "kettle" demonstrators if you could slap these on the ringleaders and steer them where you want? Compass embodies a concept we might, or at least ought to, be familiar with - a technology that it is easier not to resist. The realisation that giving in to the machine is a lot less hassle than resisting it echoes the way millions of us have already grudgingly accepted a host of invasive technologies for the sake of an easier life. Many of us resign ourselves to Facebook?s baffling privacy settings and risk ID theft, sign up to Google?s free services which, post-hoc, have now all been linked to profile us, or simply own a smartphone stuffed with free apps that mine contacts data, because it is just too hard to do things another way. Will we cave just as easily to robotic invasions? Probably.

Putting control firmly back in human hands, a static robot model perched on a plinth presents an entertaining idea. Called RoboVox, it?s a downscaled version of this?eight-metre-high monster robot that?s been touring Europe. It receives text messages and a computer inside the robot converts your SMS to speech, voiced in a slightly-bored-voice-of-doom patois with red LEDs across its "mouth" illuminating every syllable. Creator Martin Bricelj hopes people will get it to voice ?your statement, protest or declaration of love?. RoboVox is aiming to give a voice back to people whose voices usually get ?lost in the sound of the mass?, using more technology to combat the depersonalising effect of information overload.

    2nd-pic-ada-02print.jpg

    ADA by Karine Smigla-Bobinski

But this focus on empowering the individual is notably lacking from some of the other exhibits. ADA, by Karina Smigla-Bobinski, is described as an ?analogue drawing prosthetic?, which aims to create a crowdsourced set of images from the collective movements of FACT visitors. The transparent plastic helium balloon - four metres in diameter - is covered in 10-centimetre-long spikes made of coal. The idea is that visitors bounce ADA off the walls (this is great fun by the way, and involves much ducking as the ball whizzes past with its spiky coal pencils spinning), so the coal impacts make random marks on the papered walls. It?s a very low-tech way of coding for an image, says Smigla-Bobinski, so she named it after Ada Lovelace, co-worker and programmer of Charles Babbage?s 19th-century mechanical, cogwheel-based proto-computer, The Difference Engine. As you enter the room, ADA is floating in the space before you. It?s a cool idea, and one I?d describe as "off the wall" - if it wasn?t also off the floor.

A locally-developed exhibit called MeYouAndUs requires less active interaction. The best way to describe it is a time-delayed video mirror. A camera shoots the crowd in one of the gallery?s rooms and these images are shown on an oversized LCD TV after a time delay. With other effects, such as speeding up the delayed action intermittently, you get an engrossing and slightly unpredictable result that it?s hard to stop watching. On a second screen, people arriving in the room see video of their head, chest, midriff, legs and feet chopped and swapped with those of many other visitors.

This modern live video take on bendy fairground mirrors is insanely popular. ?People really, really love it - there?s something weirdly compelling about it. People are fascinated by their own image and their identities being combined,? says FACT director Mike Stubbs, who?s also a film maker. And they?re planning to go global - FACT plan to link MeYouAndUs to a gallery in Ghana, allowing identities from multiple countries to be merged to get ?very diverse communities interacting,? says Stubbs.

If people can adore an installation that hijacks their live image - mocks it even, by mashing it up with those of others - something odd is happening. Has the latter-day prevalence of CCTV got us caving into image-related invasions of privacy without a thought? It seems the time for resistance passed before we even noticed we had a choice.

Robots and Avatars is exhibited at the Foundation for Art and Creative Technology,? Liverpool, UK and runs?until 27 May 2012

Researchers: Wallenberg Budapest mission no fluke

STOCKHOLM (AP) ? World War II hero Raoul Wallenberg's appointment for a mission to rescue Hungarian Jews from the Nazis may not have been as random as previously thought, researchers said Monday.

U.S.-based Wallenberg researchers Susanne Berger and Vadim Birstein said they have obtained new material that suggests the Swede was well-connected with Swedish decision-makers and Hungary's resistance movement before he was sent to Budapest in 1944.

"He was not some green, naive guy who started from scratch when he was in Budapest," Berger told The Associated Press. "There was a very strong push for him from numerous quarters it now seems."

Wallenberg is credited with saving thousands of Jews in Budapest by distributing false Swedish passports or giving shelter in diplomatic enclaves. He vanished after being arrested in Budapest by the Soviet Red Army in 1945, but the Russians have never explained why they detained the Swedish diplomat.

It's well known that Wallenberg's work as a Swedish diplomat in Budapest was a cover for his true mission as secret emissary of the U.S. War Refugee Board, created by U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt in a belated attempt to stem the annihilation of Europe's Jews.

But Berger and Birstein said diary notes and other documents they obtained last year from the daughter of Hungarian diplomat Antal Ullein-Reviczky, a key figure in Hungary's resistance movement who was linked to U.S. and British intelligence officials, challenges the widely held belief that the choice of Wallenberg for the assignment in 1944 was largely accidental.

Ullein-Reviczky's guest lists and notes from dinner parties and other social events, in both Stockholm and Budapest between 1943 and 1944, show that Wallenberg frequently socialized with influential people that would make his appointment possible, the researchers said.

Among them were Sweden's Foreign Minister Christian Gunther and senior Foreign Ministry official Erik Boheman. Wallenberg also met with senior politicians, business executives and others within Hungary's social elite who Berger described as "the core group of anti-Nazi sentiment."

"All that would have caught Soviet attention," the researchers said in a statement, noting that many of Ullein-Reviczky's acquaintances have been found in Wallenberg's contact book.

"It is very likely that Soviet intelligence representatives in Stockholm and Hungary reported to Moscow in some detail about Raoul Wallenberg's activities in the years 1943-1945," they said.

Ingrid Carlberg, a Swedish journalist who will publish a book on Wallenberg this year, called the new information "very interesting."

"I knew Wallenberg and Ullein-Reviczky were in contact, but not to this extent," she said.

Carlberg said the findings support her own theory that Wallenberg's contacts with figures linked to Western intelligence services "triggered Stalin's irritation" and helps explain why Moscow would have viewed him with suspicion.

The Soviets initially denied Wallenberg was in their custody, but then said in 1957 that he died of a heart attack in prison on July 17, 1947.

After the Soviet collapse, that version of events was challenged by Alexander Yakovlev, the one-time chairman of a presidential panel investigating the fate of repression victims. In 2000, Yakovlev said he had been told by a former KGB chief that Wallenberg was killed in Lubyanka prison. The Russian government, however, has never formally retracted the initial Soviet version.

The recent and remarkable success of iOS as a mobile operating system has turned Apple into the biggest company in the world, placing it in a position its competitors have only dreamt about. Now, Apple has the resources, not only the talent, to turn iOS into the biggest video-gaming platform on the planet and the best part is that the company does not need to push experimental, new devices like the relatively unsuccessful Nintendo 3DS to make sure it happens. To the dismay of Sony and Nintendo, the take over is already happening because Apple?s hardware is in your pocket or bag (or perhaps your friend?s pocket or bag). That seems to be the biggest problem console manufacturers must overcome.

Oddly enough, the same factors that made a contribution to the success of iOS as a gaming plaform are the same factors that contributed to Windows?s success as a gaming platform. Windows and iOS are exceptionally handy to folks from all kinds of life, so tons of people use them. Ridiculous amounts of people utilize them, though it wasn't initially for the games. Even now, folks do not buy iPhones and iPads for gaming, but the majority of people with these devices play games on them.

But now that these devices are in everyone's hands, why not make some great games for it too? Do that, and suddenly you have the biggest, most successful mobile gaming platform on the planet. The biggest hurdle Sony and Nintendo now face is the average person?s inability to see the value of a dedicated, mobile-gaming console when a smartphone or tablet can suffice.

Of course, touchscreen, button-less devices aren't the best hardware for most games, and nothing tops a good-ol?-fashioned gamepad. For those people, arcade sticks, mini arcade cabinets and wireless controllers are available for iOS and even Android, and you can select from several options, styles and sizes. For everyone else, the choice between dropping another $200+ on hardware or learning to to get decent with touchscreen controls is an obvious one. Almost everyone would rather put in the additional work with a touchscreen display. Finally, there?s nothing like mirroring your game on an HDTV wirelessly over AirPlay.

Nintendo and Sony are now off balance. iOS permeates each sub-culture and profession in most places around the world, and Apple has the currency stacks to pay off developers for top-shelf gaming titles. Now, if only Apple would spend some time on developing OS X?s gaming library, I?d be complete. I need some Star Wars: the Old Republic in my life.

Northern Australia's Pilbara coast is under warnings, alerts and watches as powerful Cyclone Lua nears for a landfall. NASA's Aqua satellite has been providing infrared, visible and microwave data on Lua that have shown forecasters the storm is strengthening on its approach to land.

Two of the most recent infrared images of Cyclone Lua were captured from the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) instrument onboard NASA's Aqua satellite. The AIRS instrument captured infrared images of Cyclone Lua on March 15 at 1741 UTC and March 16 at 0553 UTC. The later image appeared to show that Lau was becoming more organized and more compact, signs that the storm was strengthening. Bands of thunderstorms are also wrapping into the low-level center, another sign of strengthening. Over that time period the storm had grown from a tropical storm to a cyclone. Aqua captured an infrared image of the storm's cloud top temperatures using the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) instrument. AIRS data showed that the coldest (purple) cloud top temperatures (colder than -63F/-52.7C).

The list of warnings, watches and alerts are numerous. A Cyclone Warning is current for coastal areas from Cape Leveque to Dampier, including Port Hedland, Karratha, Dampier and Broome, as well as inland parts of the eastern Pilbara and far western Kimberley. A Cyclone Watch is current for the central and eastern inland Pilbara including Telfer, Newman and Paraburdoo, the western inland Kimberley, the eastern Gascoyne including Meekatharra, and the far western Interior.

Yellow and Blue Alerts are also in effect. A Yellow Alert is in effect for residents between Broome and Whim Creek including Bidyadanga, Port Hedland, South Hedland, Warralong, Yande Yarra, Marble Bar and adjacent pastoral and mining leases. A Blue Alert is in effect for residents in coastal communities between Whim Creek and Dampier including Karratha, Dampier, Roebourne, Wickham and Point Samson as well as inland communities including Nullagine, Newman and Jigalong and surrounding pastoral and mining leases.

ABC Online Melboure reports that flights have been canceled and roads have been closed. Officials have also closed Karijini National Park because of flash flooding risk.

On March 16, 2012 at 0900 UTC (5 a.m. EST), Tropical cyclone Lua's maximum sustained winds were near 75 knots (86 mph/139 kph). Cyclone-force winds extended out 30 nautical miles (34.5 miles/55.5 km) from the center, while tropical storm-force winds extended out to 160 nautical miles (184 miles/296.3 km) from the center.

Lua was located near 16.5 South and 116.6 East, about 260 miles north-northwest of Port Hedland, Australia. Lua was moving to the east-southeast at 10 knots (11.5 mph/18.5 kph).

Lua is forecast to strengthen to 90 knots (103.6 mph/166.7 kph) before making landfall around midday (local time) on March 17 just north of Port Hedland. By March 19, Lua is expected to dissipate in central or southern Western Australia. The Australian Bureau of Meteorology is issuing updates every three hours. Admin. outlines options on birth control coverage

(AP) ? The Obama administration signaled Friday it's willing to help insurance companies offset the cost of providing free birth control to women working at church-affiliated institutions like hospitals and colleges.

By finding a way to make the middlemen whole, the administration may be able to extricate itself from an unexpected political furor over birth control that has mobilized partisans across the political spectrum a half-century after the advent of the pill.

A 32-page regulatory proposal unveiled Friday offered options for providing free birth control to women whose employers object to contraception on religious grounds. The government now classifies birth control as preventive care, and President Barack Obama's health care law requires health plans to cover prevention at no cost to the consumer.

Churches, synagogues, mosques and other institutions whose primary purpose is to propagate faith are exempt from the mandate. But when the administration sought to impose the requirement on religious nonprofits serving the public, it triggered a backlash. That forced President Barack Obama himself to offer a compromise: insurers, not the religious employers would bear the responsibility.

Friday's proposal lists options for carrying out the president's compromise without forcing insurers to bear the whole cost ? or tempting them to engineer backdoor maneuvers to recoup money from religious institutions that object to birth control.

Administration officials are seeking public comment for 90 days and will sift the responses before making any final decision. Reflecting the sensitivity of the issue, officials spoke only on condition of anonymity.

"Our general principle is that we want to maintain the posture that a religious organization that objects to paying for contraception, won't," said an official who briefed reporters.

The basic idea is to use the levers of government policy to reimburse the insurance companies, for example, by providing them credits against fees they would have to pay under another provision of the health care law. Finding a balance will be tricky because of the complexity of the health care law.

Women's groups were generally supportive of the administration's latest move, although it seemed unlikely to please religious conservatives. Catholic bishops have taken a forceful stand opposing the birth control requirement as an affront to religious freedom.

Sister Mary Ann Walsh, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, questioned the timing of the announcement, late Friday on the eve of St. Patrick's Day festivities. She said church leaders will begin studying the proposal immediately, "but now is too soon to know what it actually says."

Administration officials say they don't expect an endorsement from the bishops, but they are hoping the accommodation will work for hospitals, colleges and charitable organizations.

The head of the Catholic Health Association, a trade group representing more than 600 hospitals around the country, also withheld judgment.

"We have to spend time reviewing it," said Sister Carol Keehan.

Her group provided critical support for passage of Obama's health care law through Congress, publicly breaking with the bishops in a dispute over the legislations restrictions on taxpayer funding for abortions.

The insurance industry also said it would need more time to study the proposals.

Additionally, the administration released new rules for student health plans on Friday. Generally, the requirements will lead to more robust coverage. But because of a previously unforeseen gap in federal legislation, not all student plans will have to upgrade. Plans sponsored by religious colleges would be given more time to comply with the birth control coverage provisions.

Discovering Surgical Technology and Other Health Careers

Health careers are absolutely worth a little time and attention if you feel the need to change directions in life or if you are out of a job like so many people are these days. This is an industry that is always hiring because people always need jobs. One of the reasons the health care industry has grown so much is that the Baby Boom generation has aged and needs more medical care than they used to. When it comes to health careers, as you will see from this article, there are lots of different fields to choose from.

Even in areas where unemployment is high, you?ll often find many job openings for home health care aides. This is where you will care for people in their own homes when they are elderly, very ill or disabled. You may find yourself helping them with the tasks associated with daily life: taking the right medicines at the right times, eating, getting into and out of bed, etc. Home health care aides also do a variety of chores like shopping for their patients, taking them to doctor appointments and fixing meals. You can do this independently or contract through a home health agency. The educational requirements of this job are different depending on where you live. There are some states that require home health aides to be Certified Nursing Assistants.

If you like to teach and want a health related job, you might think about becoming a health educator.

A career in the health industry is not for everyone, so you should make sure that your personality fits, plus you like what they do. Health related jobs are of many different types, and the ones that don?t fit your interests and talents, you shouldn?t even pursue. You might really want to be a medical secretary, or even do medical billing, but you should look for something else, if you have a hard time sitting for long periods. I hope that you don?t spend years being a nurse, and later find out that you don?t want to be around blood. You should be able to find the right career choice, because the medical field has plenty of diversity. There are options for working in many different areas, such as with children, people with disabilities, or older people. There are even jobs just dealing with information, and that might be your preference.

If you are unemployed or aren?t happy with your current career, there are a ton of opportunities just waiting for you in the health related industry. If you think you are too old for a new career or that you can?t afford to go back to school, think again; don?t just assume that you can?t do it. There are some jobs in the health industry that don?t require lots of training and you might be able to get a loan or a grant for your schooling.

Catholic bishops pressured Komen over Planned Parenthood

When he visited the United States four years ago, Pope Benedict XVI blessed a box of silver ribbon-shaped pins for breast cancer charity Susan G. Komen for the Cure and sent them to its founder, Nancy Brinker.

Brinker was touched by the gesture and thanked the pontiff in person on the day of his departure.

"He took my hands and blessed me for my work. I couldn't help myself. I burst into tears," she recalls in her memoir, "Promise Me: How a Sister's Love Launched the Global Movement to End Breast Cancer."

Pope Benedict's blessings marked a high point in the Komen charity's relationship with the Catholic church. But even before the papal jetliner touched down at Andrews Air Force Base near Washington in 2008, American church leaders had already begun to emerge as critics of Komen's longstanding ties to Planned Parenthood, the women's health organization whose services include birth control and abortion.

      7. In risky election-year move, Republicans offer Medicare alternatives

Internal Komen documents reviewed by Reuters reveal the complicated relationship between the Komen Foundation and the Catholic church, which simultaneously contributes to the breast cancer charity and receives grants from it. In recent years, Komen has allocated at least $17.6 million of the donations it receives to U.S. Catholic universities, hospitals and charities.

Church opposition reached dramatic new proportions in 2011, when the 11 bishops who represent Ohio's 2.6 million Catholics announced a statewide policy banning church and parochial school donations to Komen.

Such pressure helped sway Komen's leadership to cut funding to Planned Parenthood, according to current and former Komen officials. The decision, made public in January, and Komen's reversal only days later, sparked an angry outcry from both sides of an intensifying American debate over abortion.

Story: Komen charity under microscope for funding, science

The anti-abortion movement gathered momentum last year when hundreds of newly elected Republicans entered office across the country and ushered in a wave of local and federal legislation aimed at restricting abortion services and family planning.

"From a moral point of view, and that's what this is about, it has to do with cooperation and doing things contrary to the church's teaching," Bishop Leonard Paul Blair of Toledo said of the agreement the Catholic Conference of Ohio reached on diocese donations.

"In today's world, there are a lot of entanglements of many things and one has to exercise a certain prudence about standing firm on principle and church teaching and the moral conscience," he told Reuters in an interview.

Komen officials at the Dallas-based charity declined to speak on the record about relations with the Catholic church.

    The shift
The earliest signs of discord came in 2005, when South Carolina's Catholic diocese pulled out of the local Komen fundraiser. It was followed over the next four years by individual dioceses in Arizona, Indiana, Florida, Missouri and other states, where bishops either spoke out against Komen or took steps to stem donations to the charity, mainly because of its Planned Parenthood link.

The momentum picked up in 2011 when top Ohio clerics met in Columbus. High on their agenda was the question of whether the state's nine dioceses should participate in Komen fundraisers.

No Planned Parenthood clinics in Ohio receive Komen money. But the bishops decided that diocese funds should no longer benefit the charity, for fear that money sent from local Komen affiliates to the Dallas headquarters could wind up in Planned Parenthood's coffers or help fund research on stem cells collected from human fetuses, according to church officials.

Planned Parenthood was receiving between $500,000 and $700,000 annually in Komen grants to fund cancer screenings and education for low-income women, many with nowhere else to turn. The charity says it does not fund embryonic stem cell research.

The Ohio bishops would soon be joined by the North Dakota Catholic Conference, which cautioned its nearly 190,000 parishioners against donating to Komen. The charity's officials in California also say they received their first request in two decades to meet with Catholic bishops, who expressed concern about Planned Parenthood but took no action.

The Ohio and North Dakota pronouncements nearly doubled the number of dioceses that have questioned Komen's support for Planned Parenthood or severed financial ties with the charity, bringing the total to at least 23 of the 195 Catholic dioceses in the United States.

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has no official policy on donations to Komen because funding activities take place at the local level, according to conference spokeswoman Sister Mary Ann Walsh. That could change as more bishops speak out on the issue, though another conference official said the national body has no plans to take up the question.

Observers say the local bishops' focus on Komen and other social issues reflects a larger conservative shift within the American church since New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan became chairman of the Conference in November 2010.

Under Dolan's leadership, the conference last year set up a new ad hoc committee on religious liberty to oppose government policies that conflict with church teachings on abortion, contraception and gay marriage.

That move coincided with the rise of social conservatives in Congress and state legislatures during the 2010 elections and has gathered pace during the 2012 presidential campaign.

"It's an ideal time for them to push both Democrats and Republicans to acquiesce to their demands, because nobody wants to be seen as disrespecting religion," said Jon O'Brien of the advocacy group, Catholics for Choice, which opposes the Vatican on matters related to sex, marriage and family life.

    The dilemma
But even as opposition to Komen continues, some Catholic recipients of Komen money have promoted their ties with the breast cancer charity to the media. Other institutions carry hypertext links to Komen on their Web sites and some display the Susan G. Komen for the Cure logo, including a pink ribbon.

In Ohio, tens of thousands of dollars in Komen grants have gone to some of the same institutions that bishops there proposed as funding alternatives to Komen.

Georgetown University in Washington has received $15 million in Komen grants. Catholic institutions overall collected $7.4 million from the charity in 2011 alone, while Planned Parenthood's receipts totaled $684,000 during the same year.

The grants, and the warm reception for Komen among some Catholic institutions, underscore the common interests of charity and church in protecting women against a devastating and deadly disease. But some outside observers say the money also raises ethical questions about the bishops' opposition role.

"It is morally inconsistent, and difficult to explain, why you would condemn donations but continue to accept grants. It makes no ethical sense at all," said Arthur Caplan of the University of Pennsylvania's Center for Bioethics and contributor to msnbc.com.

Caplan: Might be too little, too late for Komen

    Some parishioners agree.

"It is blatantly hypocritical," said Al Mancuso, a 42-year-old Cleveland resident who regularly attends church and volunteers at church functions but opposes the Ohio bishops' stance on Komen and Planned Parenthood.

Michele Allen, a 40-year-old mother of two from Lyndhurst, Ohio, said: "This happens every election cycle. The church is a little too politicized. This association with the Republicans and all these pro-life issues around the primaries is too connected with politics."

Catholic officials say there is nothing inconsistent about criticizing Komen's spending policies while accepting money from the charity. They argue that church-affiliated institutions can reach some of the poorest and most underserved women without spending funds in ways that conflict with Catholic teachings.

"I don't see any kind of ethical or moral concern here," said the Rev. Tadeusz Pacholczyk of the National Catholic Bioethics Center, an agency that analyzes healthcare and life science issues from the standpoint of church moral tradition.

"The concern is at the front end, when you're donating money to an entity that's taking that money and using it in a contradictory way."
