South African business owners need to get to grips with the future of business in a digital age or risk missing the great opportunities that the e-commerce industry has to offer, according to PayU, a mobile and online payment service provider.

Mark Chirnside, CEO of PayU MEA, said online retail had seen tremendous growth over the last few years.

?In a recent PayU survey, a number of South Africans said that they felt that more education around e-commerce would lead to an increase in online activity, so we can expect this growth to continue,? he said.

?According to the 2011 World Wide Worx online retail study, there was an internet boom in SA between 2006 and 2008 and since then, we have been seeing a sustained increase in the rate of growth of internet users in SA,? he added.

The study also made mention of the fact that if South African organisations were not ready to serve their customers online by 2013 when the next boom is expected, they will find alternative services that are available online.

According to Chirnside, there was a clear need to define industry terminology, as technical and industry jargon make it more challenging for the majority of the public to come to grips with what e-commerce is exactly and what it could potentially mean for them.

?PayU has released a glossary of a number of words or technical terms used in the e-commerce industry so that South Africans can familiarise themselves with the concepts, this can be accessed on the PayU website,? said Chirnside.

PayU Payment Solutions, a division of multi-national media giant Naspers, processes 65% of all the online payments in SA.
