KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt was named the AFC Defensive Player of the Year as part of the annual NFL 101 Awards.

Watt led the league with 20.5 sacks, broke up 16 passes and forced four fumbles.

Houston finished the year 12-4 and won the AFC South division. They were eliminated from the AFC playoffs in the Divisional round Sunday by the New England Patriots.

Watt is a first-time 101 Award winner and Pro Bowl selection. He has started every game for the Texans after being drafted with the 11th overall pick in 2011.

A national media committee comprised of 101 sportswriters and broadcasters, who cover the NFL, selected the Watt and other winners in each award category in a nationwide vote at the conclusion of the regular season.

The 2012 season award winners will be presented with trophies at the 43rd Annual NFL 101 Awards gala March 2, at the Westin Crown Center in Kansas City.

Event proceeds will be directed to the Truman Medical Center Charitable Foundation. The Kansas City Chiefs and TMC are working together to provide wellness education and promote healthier living for the people of Kansas City.?

Judge Rules Newspapers Can?t Just Use Photos From Twitter As Their Own

Agence France-Presse, better known as the AFP is very concerned about copyrights. It has sued Google in the past over stories featured on Google News, for example. So, being that concerned about copyright, they? uh? decided that anything posted to Twitter was fair game because Internet. Oops!

We wish we were joking that this was the AFP?s argument for taking the photos, but that?s really what it boils down to:

AFP had argued that because the images were on Twitter, they were publicly available, but District Judge Alison Nathan pointed to Twitter?s terms of service, which do not give news organizations the ability to publish images without the photographer?s permission.

It gets a lot worse: The AFP not only denied the photographer, Daniel Morel, any credit, they then sold the images to Getty Images as their own. So, just to review, the company really, really concerned about protecting their intellectual rights not only stole some random stranger?s stuff, they then sold it and kept the money without his knowledge, and when the photographer called them out on this and sued them, their defense and the basis of their countersuit was that they were totally free because he posted them to social media, so neener. Which is the exact same thing newspapers have been whining about bloggers doing.

Morel is suing for damages based on every time the photo was reprinted without permission, but the judge is only allowing him to spank the AFP financially once. Oh, come on, Judge! We need more of this rich, delicious irony!

This is also important because it firmly establishes that anything posted to social media requires explicit permission to be run, and that the photographer has rights. But we?re more about the irony, really.

Ravens wide receiver Anquan Boldin has spit out a guarantee that the Baltimore Ravens will beat the Patriots on Sunday.

How to be sure it's a guarantee? Boldin kept it simple: "We'll win."

It's one thing when a fringe special teams guy is tweeting junk at the Patriots late in the evening and apologizing for it when the daylight comes and his head clears (see: Ayanbadejo, Brendon).

For the estimable Boldin, an 11-year veteran who is playing in his third conference championship game, to make the statement is a different kettle of blabbermouth.

The Patriots historically shrug and apply the, "We prefer to talk on the field . . ." mantra to the pregame hype machine. We'll keep you posted to see if they stick to that.

NEW YORK (AP) - Theo Epstein traded for Adrian Gonzalez and signed Carl Crawford following pressure from Boston Red Sox owners to build a "sexy team," according to a book co-authored by former Boston Red Sox manager Terry Francona.

Epstein, who left as general manager after the 2011 season to become a Chicago Cubs executive, said Boston owner John Henry, chairman Tom Werner and president Larry Lucchino made the team's image a priority, according to excerpts released Tuesday by Sports Illustrated.

"Francona: The Red Sox Years" is co-written by the Boston Globe's Dan Shaughnessy and is scheduled for publication by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt on Jan. 22.

"They told us we didn't have any marketable players, that we needed some sizzle," Epstein is quoted as saying. "We need some sexy guys. Talk about the tail wagging the dog. This is like an absurdist comedy. We'd become too big. It was the farthest thing removed from what we set out to be."

On Nov. 2, 2010, a group gathered at Fenway Park to review results of that $100,000 marketing research project the Red Sox had commissioned following declining ratings of NESN, the regional sports network partly owned by the team.

The books stated the marketing report said: "(W)omen are definitely more drawn to the `soap opera' and `reality-TV' aspects of the game ... They are interested in good-looking stars and sex symbols" - a reference to All-Star second baseman Dustin Pedroia.

Gonzalez and Crawford were traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers last summer along with Josh Beckett after the Red Sox fell out of contention.

Francona left after the 2011 season, when the Red Sox lost 20 of their last 27 games, becoming the first team to lead by nine games in September and not make the postseason. He worked for ESPN in 2012. Cleveland hired him in October as its manager.

Francona said owners refused to let the Red Sox play day games on final days of homestands because of television.

"One thing the players were always asking for was getaway day games," he said. "The owners would never go for it. They couldn't have more day games because the ratings were already suffering, and that would have hurt worse."

Francona is quoted as saying that at the Sept. 30, 2011, meeting with owners he said: "If you don't know what you are doing about me, why am I here? This is a silly meeting. If you don't want me, just tell me." The team announced later that day that it was not exercising his option.

"It was at that meeting that he said that he had lost control of the clubhouse," Werner is quoted as saying, "that he was not the right person to continue as manager."

Francona recalled the session differently: "I never said I lost control of the clubhouse I said I hadn't been able to reach some of the guys."

He was critical of the owners in the book.

"They come in with all these ideas about baseball, but I don't think they love baseball," he said. "I think they like baseball. It's revenue, and I know that's their right and their interest because they're owners ... and they're good owners. But they don't love the game. It's still more of a toy or a hobby for them. It's not their blood. They're going to come in and out of baseball. It's different for me. Baseball is my life."

Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola continues to see people sickened by the flu outbreak that arrived early in Pensacola this year and has lasted longer than a typical flu season.

The first signs of the flu outbreak appeared in late October and the number of cases kept climbing throughout November and December. For the period from Oct. 28 through Jan. 5, Sacred Heart Hospital ran lab tests on 1,923 people who had flu-like symptoms. Of those, 546 tested positive for influenza.

Since the beginning of December, the Sacred Heart Urgent Care Center in Pensacola has seen 186 people with flu-like symptoms. (The Urgent Care Center on Hwy 29 is open every day from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.)

Prevention
Influenza is thought to spread from one person to another when the infected person coughs or sneezes. There are some things you can to do protect yourself and others, according to CDC.

? Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it. If you don't have a tissue, CDC suggests that you cough or sneeze into your elbow. Be sure to wash the shirt, blouse, jacket, etc. that you are wearing as soon as possible.

? Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hands cleaners are also effective.

? Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.

? If you get sick, CDC recommends that you stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.

Florida WC Kicks Off 2013 Python Challenge

Nearly 800 people are registered and ready to compete to see who can bring in the longest and the most Burmese pythons from designated public lands in south Florida, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) announced today at the 2013 Python Challenge Kickoff in Davie.

For competitors, the challenge is to harvest the well-camouflaged Burmese python, which can grow to more than 17 feet in the wild in Florida, with the chance of winning prizes of up to $1,500. Registrants are coming from more than 30 other states. They will have from 1 p.m. today through midnight on Sunday, Feb. 10 to find these nonvenomous constrictors.

For the FWC, the primary goals of the Python Challenge are to raise public awareness and increase the agency?s knowledge base regarding this invasive species and how to better understand and address impacts on the Everglades ecosystem, including native wildlife.

?The 2013 Python Challenge is an unprecedented effort to focus public interest, support and direct involvement to help deal with Burmese pythons,? said FWC Chairman Kenneth Wright at the kickoff news conference. ?The FWC is pleased that so many people are joining this earnest effort to limit the impact of this invasive species on Florida?s diverse native wildlife. Floridians and people from all across the United States truly care about the Florida Everglades, and they are clearly eager to help us better understand and solve this problem,? Wright added.

?When they harvest snakes, Python Challenge? competitors will be collecting valuable data that will contribute to the current Burmese python research and management efforts of the FWC and its partners,? Wright said. ?We are grateful to Python Challenge? participants, sponsors and partners for helping make this event happen.?

FWC officials today welcomed competitors and the public to the 2013 Python Challenge? Kickoff at the University of Florida Fort Lauderdale Research and Education Center, which is in Davie. People attending the kickoff had the chance to get a close-up look at captive Burmese pythons, learn from experts how to identify these snakes and witness demonstrations of python-handling techniques. UF held its annual open house featuring work by faculty and students addressing invasive species in Florida.

The kickoff is the first of two public awareness events. The Python Challenge concludes with an Awareness and Awards Event on Saturday, Feb. 16 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Zoo Miami.

There are two separate Python Challenge competitions: the General Competition for the public and the Python Permit Holders Competition for people who have permits from the FWC and other agencies to regularly harvest these snakes. Both groups will be collecting data. When dropping off a harvested Burmese python, participants must submit data sheets providing information such as the snake?s size, GPS location and habitat where it was found.

Grand prizes of $1,500 for harvesting the most Burmese pythons will be awarded to winners of both the General Competition and the Python Permit Holders Competition, with an additional $1,000 prize for the longest Burmese python harvested overall. Funding for the prizes is provided by sponsors and through registration fees.

People can sign up for the Python Challenge at any time during the Jan. 12 to Feb. 10 competition, even on the final day. Go to?PythonChallenge.org?for the required online training, official rules and registration, as well as information on the public events.

The key sponsors of the 2013 Python Challenge are the Felburn Foundation and Flowers Foundation. Many partners, including the University of Florida, The Nature Conservancy, The Future of Hunting in Florida, the Wildlife Foundation of Florida and Zoo Miami, are providing important support for the Python Challenge.

The FWC?s partner agencies have also played a critical role in these efforts; they include South Florida Water Management District, Everglades National Park and Big Cypress National Preserve.

Florida prohibits possession or sale of Burmese pythons for use as pets, and federal law bans the importation and interstate sale of this species. The public can help the fight to control invasive species such as Burmese pythons by:

• Reporting sightings of exotic species to?IveGot1.org,?888-IVEGOT1?(888-483-4861) or by using the free smart phone app IVEGOT1 for iPhone and Android. It?s helpful if you can submit a photo and location.
• Not releasing an exotic pet into the wild, and reminding others of the dangers of releasing nonnative species.

Oil and metals prices fall on worries about demand outlook while major crops rise

New York: Oil and metals prices fell on Friday on worries about the demand outlook while some major crops rose, helping a key commodities index edge higher for the day.

For the week, the 19-commodity Thomson Reuters Jeffries CRB index also settled higher, helped by big rally across commodities on Thursday as the dollar slumped.

The US currency continued its trek lower in Friday?s session, hitting its lowest against the euro since April as the market continued to digest the European Central Bank?s decision on Thursday to hold off on an expected rate cut.

On Friday, oil prices fell in heavy trading, dragged by a drop in gasoline on expectations that a large number of European cargoes could hit US shores due to a seasonal slump in demand in West Africa.

Copper closed lower on Friday as demand from top consumer China remained weak. A day earlier, the metal had hit a one-week high in European trading.

Gold fell on Friday too, after growing inflation pressure in China dented hopes for more stimulus from the world?s second-largest economy.

The CRB index managed to settle a touch higher, helped by gains of about 2 per cent or more in coffee, wheat and corn.

Natural gas was the outlier, rising more than 4 per cent, and closing up for a second day, backed by a bullish weekly report on inventories and colder forecasts for next week that could boost heating demand.

For the week, the CRB was up 0.9 per cent, almost identical to Thursday?s daily gain, as the ECB?s rate cut hold pushed the dollar sharply lower against the euro, boosting raw materials priced in the US currency.

Thursday?s run-up on the CRB was the largest daily increase so far this year.

Some traders have doubts about whether commodities will continue to rise in the near term, unless giant consumer China starts to issue consistently strong economic data.

While China?s export growth rebounded surprisingly sharply to a seven-month high in December, its copper imports declined 6.6 per cent from November. China is the world?s largest buyer of copper and other base metals.

?China spent much of last year accumulating stockpiles at attractive prices. Now a recovery is beginning to take place they have more than enough metal lying around,? said Nic Brown, head of commodities research at Natixis.

Copper, brent oil and gold down

Three-month copper on the London Metal Exchange closed down 0.8 per cent at $8,045 a tonne.

In crude oil, London?s benchmark Brent settled down 1.1 per cent at $110.64 a barrel, retreating below its 100-day moving average of $111.05. Volume in Brent crude was 50 per cent above the 30-day norm, preliminary Thomson Reuters data showed.

US gasoline futures dropped 2 per cent, the biggest daily decline since early November, amid talk of large volumes of European gasoline headed to the New York Harbour, delivery point for US oil product futures, as fuel demand in West Africa declined seasonally.

In gold, the spot price of bullion slipped below its 200-day moving average, down 0.7 per cent to hover around $1,662 late Friday afternoon in New York.

On the grains side, front-month corn on the Chicago Board of Trade settled up 1.4 per cent at $7.083/4 a bushel ? after setting a three-week peak above $7.23 ? on tighter-than-expected supply projections from the US Department of Agriculture.

The USDA, in hotly anticipated crop reports, pegged the US corn stockpile at 8.03 billion bushels as of December 1. That was 3 per cent smaller than expected.

Wheat had its biggest daily gain since late November. The front-month futures contract on the CBOT also rose 1.4 per cent like corn to settle at $7.54-3.4 a bushel after a one-week week at $7.73.

Arabica coffee jumped more than 2 per cent to a one-month high in New York trading. The front-month contract settled up 3.70 cents, or 2.5 per cent, at $1.5335 per lb, with trading volumes more than double the 30-day average, according to Thomson Reuters data.
