African-American youth exposed to more magazine and television alcohol advertising than youth in general

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? African-American youth ages 12-20 are seeing more advertisements for alcohol in magazines and on TV compared with all youth ages 12-20, according to a new report from the Center on Alcohol Marketing and Youth (CAMY) at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.?

The report analyzes alcohol exposure by type and brand among African-American youth in comparison to all youth. It also assesses exposure of African-American youth to alcohol advertising relative to African-American adults across various media venues using the most recent year(s) of data available.

Alcohol is the most widely used drug among African-American youth, and is associated with violence, motor vehicle crashes and the spread of sexually transmitted diseases. At least 14 studies have found that the more young people are exposed to alcohol advertising and marketing, the more likely they are to drink, or if they are already drinking, to drink more.

"The report's central finding -- that African-American youth are being over-exposed to alcohol advertising -- is a result of two key phenomena," said author David Jernigan, PhD, the director of CAMY. "First, brands are specifically targeting African-American audiences and, secondly, African-American media habits make them more vulnerable to alcohol advertising in general because of higher levels of media consumption. As a result, there should be a commitment from alcohol marketers to cut exposure to this high-risk population."

The report finds certain brands, channels and formats overexpose African-American youth to alcohol advertisements: ? Magazines: African-American youth saw 32 percent more alcohol advertising than all youth in national magazines during 2008. Five publications with high African-American youth readership generated at least twice as much exposure to African-American youth compared to all youth: Jet (440 percent more), Essence (435 percent more), Ebony (426 percent more), Black Enterprise (421 percent more), and Vibe (328 percent more ). Five brands of alcohol overexposed African-American youth compared to all youth and to African-American adults: Seagram's Twisted Gin, Seagram's Extra Dry Gin, Jacques Cardin Cognac, 1800 Silver Tequila, and Hennessey Cognacs. ? Television: African-American youth were exposed to 17 percent more advertising per capita than all youth in 2009, including 20 percent more exposure to distilled spirits advertising. Several networks generated at least twice as much African-American youth exposure to alcohol advertising than all youth: TV One (453 percent more), BET (344 percent more), SoapNet (299 percent more), CNN (130 percent more) and TNT (122 percent more). ? Radio: African-American youth heard 26 percent less advertising in 2009 for alcohol than all youth on stations with the most advanced measurement data available; however, they heard 32 percent more radio advertising for distilled spirits. In these markets, four station formats delivered more alcohol advertising exposure to African-American youth than to African-American adults: Contemporary Hit/Rhythmic (104 percent more), Contemporary Hit/Pop (14 percent more), Urban (13 percent more) and Hot Adult Contemporary (43 percent more).

"Alcohol products and imagery continue to pervade African-American youth culture, despite the well known negative health consequences," said Denise Herd, PhD, an associate professor with the University of California Berkeley School of Public Health who reviewed the report. "The findings of this report make clear immediate action is needed to protect the health and well-being of young African Americans."

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Youth Risk Behavior Survey, about one in three African-American high school students in the U.S. are current drinkers, and about 40 percent of those who drink report binge drinking. While alcohol use and binge drinking tend to be less common among African-American adults than among other racial and ethnic groups, African-American adults who binge drink tend to do so more frequently and with higher intensity than non-African Americans.

In 2003, trade groups for beer and distilled spirits committed to placing alcohol ads in media venues only when underage youth comprise 30 percent of the audience or less. Since that time, a number of groups and officials, including the National Research Council, the Institute of Medicine and 24 state attorneys general, have called upon the alcohol industry to strengthen its standard and meet a "proportional" 15 percent placement standard, given that the group most at risk for underage drinking -- 12 to 20 year-olds -- is less than 15 percent of the U.S. population.

The report is available on CAMY's website, www.camy.org.

Safeguards Available If You Fear Downpayments for Home ...

? Ventilation is Key to a Good Roof

Occasionally I run into a customer who is afraid of giving a downpayment for work that they want done. They may have been burned in the past or just don?t trust themselves enough to have adequately checked out a business. If, for any reason, you do not trust the person who is trying to sell you something, do not do business with them. If you do trust them but still have reservations you can check out their online profile, or simply use a credit card.

Credit Cards: Many companies will now accept credit cards. You may have to pay the 3% processing fee, but if your contractor chooses not to show up to install your replacement windows or whatever product you are having installed, you can simply call your credit card company and tell them you never received the service promised. Most credit companies will remove the charge for up to 90 days after the card has been charged.

Online Profile: Several free websites such as Google and Yelp allow homeowners to comment and rate companies. Check them out BEFORE they come to your home. It is fair to ask the owner of a company for their full name as well. In Wisconsin, you can search circuit court records online to check them out, but be careful ? sometimes you can confuse someone who has the same or similar name but if you look closely you will notice they have a different birthdate, address, or middle initial. Today, nearly everyone has something in there. Even the author of this article has a ticket for not wearing his seat belt and driving a bit fast.

Better Business Bureau: The Better Business Bureau, sometimes just called the BBB, is available both online and over the phone to answer any questions that you have about a business. Their site is a bit tricky though so you have to know what to look for. Ratings are important, but even the absolute best company may have a maximum rating for A- until they meet the requirements of the BBB. Obviously if a company is only rated C or less, it should serve as a red flag, but you should also look at the amount of complaints a company has had. Is it spotless? Is there online one or two or has the company shown a pattern of poor service, poor products and poor judgement? Also check to see if customers have reviewed them. Are they positive, neutral or negative reviews? Sometimes the BBB will rate a company A+ even though they have had multiple issues with products and service. Be smart about using their website and look past just the rating.

Angie?s List: This is a tricky one. Angie?s list is paid for by the consumer which means if you want their ratings you have to pay for it. It sounds like it could be a decent service, but someone could easily buy subscriptions for their friends and relatives to artificially pump up their online ratings. If you use Angie?s list, use it in conjunction with other online rating places.

Gut Check: This may seem obvious, but if something just doesn?t feel right, that is reason enough not to move forward. Some people call it a ?spidey-sense? that is ?tingling? as if to warn them. But what it really boils down to is whether or not you feel your instincts are telling you that this is the right contractor or not.

So what is the right amount to put down? Many contractors require half down. Higher cost contractors often only require 1/3 down because their profits are higher. Often times you will find that the 1/2 a smaller contractor will require will be the same amount of money that the 1/3 was for a larger contractor. A good rule of thumb though is to never pay that second half until the work has been completed according to what has been written on the contract.

Why do contractors require down payments? They do this because they need to cover their materials and some of the costs of doing business. If they order products for your home and then show up on the day of install and the customer either isn?t home or refuses to let them install the product, then the contractor is not only out what they paid for the product, but they also will have to pay a restocking fee from their supplier and that is IF they allow product returns, plus they?ve lost transportation costs, delivery costs and have idled their work crew (which still needs to be paid) for the day.

The Importance of Interdisciplinary Branding

Branding means putting a cohesive face and personality on your business that connects to your customers emotionally. So when a client sees something from that company, he or she connects emotionally with it.?
? Darcy Flanders

Darcy Flanders

Interdisciplinary branding isn?t new. ?You used to do it with printed collateral, advertising and direct mail,? says branding expert Darcy Flanders, founder and chief design officer at Baseline Group NY, which specializes in branding, interactive design and strategic marketing.

Flanders is also the founder of Metro Commuter Network, which connect New York?s Westchester County commuters with the businesses along their route.

These days, print is secondary to the internet, Flanders says. But a cross-disciplinary strategy among the various ways you reach your audience ? from e-commerce and social media to mobile apps and eblasts ? remains the heart of good branding.

Flanders says the biggest mistake a company can make is calling a design firm and saying, ?I need a website? or ?I need a brochure.? Strategy is the first step, before you spend a dime on design or content. ?You have to understand who your clients are, where they find information, and what?s going to end up in their inbox that they will look at,? Flanders says. She adds, ?A website isn?t going to help you if you haven?t done the research to see what your website needs to do to connect you with your audience.?

She adds, ?There has to be a reason for everything you do now. You don?t want to build the wrong things ? or build the right thing the wrong way.? For example, some companies need a facebook presence. ?If you?re a cupcake company, it?s totally appropriate,? she says. Prospective clients are likely to find you there.

Facebook strategy for a services company is different. Her company is a case in point. Yes, Baseline Group NY has a facebook page to reinforce the company?s creditability, showcase its products and secure its status as a thought leader. So facebook is part of her branding strategy ? but she doesn?t expect to win clients via that channel.

Flanders believes every company ? no matter how small ? should have a branding strategy. ?If you are really small, you won?t get bigger if you don?t spend some money on marketing and branding,? she advises.

Finding the statistical fingerprints of election thieves

ScienceDaily (Sep. 25, 2012) ? The art of swaying an election is as old as democracy itself. Strategies like ballot stuffing, redistricting, voter venue switching, and temporary traffic detours have skewed regional results, and sometimes determined the winner.

While some tactics get exposed the old fashioned way -- by angry voters or investigations -- others don't. But new research suggests some kinds of election fraud leave a trace in the voting data.

In a paper appearing September 24 in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, a team led by Stefan Thurner brought science to the problem.

"We got into this by chance, when a Russian colleague brought us the 2011 Russian Duma-election data and asked us to take a look," says Thurner. "From the first look we were all pretty shocked, and decided to take a second look."

Thurner, a Santa Fe Institute External Professor who heads the Section for Complex Systems at the Medical University of Vienna, and colleagues looked for two kinds of rigging: incremental fraud, where votes for one party are kept in the ballot box while those for the other candidates are tossed, and extreme fraud, which shows 100 percent voter turnout in a district, all voting for the same party.

The team examined data on number of eligible voters, valid votes, and votes for the winning candidate (or party) from a dozen recent elections around the world. By comparing the distributions of votes for the winning candidate against turnout numbers, they found that rigged elections show a different voting pattern than fair ones.

In fair elections, a nation's voting pattern tends to feature one cluster, showing a general trend of voter turnout and vote for the victorious party (though some nations' regional voter preferences can distort it). Rigged ones show a cluster, but with a smear of votes toward the upper right for incremental fraud. Extreme fraud has a second, smaller, completely separate cluster at the top right corner, signifying up to 100 percent turnout and votes for the winner.

Next, the team developed a model to detect how much forged or manipulated results affected the outcome, then ran through all possibilities of both fraud types playing 0 percent to 100 percent of a part in the election, and compared those to actual data to determine their prevalence.

Among the countries studied, data from recent elections in Russia and Uganda showed both the smear of incremental fraud and the second cluster of extreme fraud, with up to 64 percent of districts being affected in Russia's 2011 vote and 39 percent in 2012. Other countries' data showed little to no such trends.

"I think it could contribute to the benefit of democracy if for every nationwide election on this planet, the raw data is made available on say a United Nations or OECD database," says Thurner. "One could then think of a set of quality standards and checks for any election -- like the ones we presented -- or better ones."

Hawaii Soldiers Serving in Afghanistan Have Only Essential Tools and

Story by Sgt. Daniel Schroeder -?FORWARD OPERATING BASE SHUKVANI, Afghanistan - When you ask Soldiers?about their deployment experience, you might hear about them going down?to the PX at Kandahar Airfield or about how they were in the middle of?nowhere using water bottles for brushing their teeth, shaving, or using?baby wipes for a shower.

Soldiers of the 25th Combat Aviation Brigade are witness to these?contrasts as they exist between service members at Kandahar Airfield,?which has more services and resources to offer, than to the Soldiers at?smaller forward operating bases.

Service members at even smaller outlying FOBs must continue?normal operations without the services and resources of the larger FOBs.?Soldiers of Company C, 1st Battalion, 169th Aviation Regiment, currently?attached to the 25th CAB, conduct MEDEVAC operations out of FOB Shukvani?with only essential tools and equipment.

"When we first arrived here, the only thing for us was a?bunker," said Staff Sgt. Mike Berry, a flight medic with C/1-169th AVN,?originally from Covington, Ga. ?"We sent a three-man advance team to set?up our area. ?They drew up the floor plan, set up tents, built floors,?and coordinated with the Marines here for generators, constructing?outhouses and emplacing HESCO barriers."

Another experience the Soldiers at FOB Shukvani experience is?living with no plumbing. ?For bathrooms, they had to construct outhouses?and equip them with exposable baggies known as Wag Bags. ?Within the?past couple of weeks, they received two portable toilets. ?Another new?addition is a tent equipped with water bags and nozzles so they can?shower.

"The shower was the biggest improvement for us," said Sgt.?Cherie Flett, flight operations noncommissioned officer, C/1-169, from?Smyrna, Tenn. ?"Before the shower tent, we were using water bottles for?showers. ?Since being here, we are still making improvements like making?walk ways, building doors for the tents, just the small things to make?it more homely."

The bigger bases have several dining facilities with chicken,?steak, tacos, hamburgers, hot dogs, salad bar and a dessert bar. ?The?smaller outlying posts have nothing of the sort.
"We receive T-Ration meals twice a day, one for breakfast and?one for dinner," said Berry. ?"For lunch, we have Meals, Ready-to-Eat,?or make what we can out of snacks."

On rare occasions, the Soldiers on FOB Shukvani get a taste of?the big FOB life. ?For example, the nights of "Surf 'n Turf," which is?slang for steak and seafood; the shrimp is delivered in a garbage bag.

The shrimp is in addition to the four trays of steak and rice that are?about as wide as a laptop computer and as thick as a stack of printer?paper.

Since the MEDEVAC Company is split up between three different?locations, they receive assistance from their counterparts in KAF or?Dwyer to bring out needed supplies, parts and food via.

"One of the things that help keep us going out here are the care?packages from home," said Flett. ?"We get mail about once a week. ?My?husband and I are both deployed out here. ?Since we are located at?different FOBs, we send each other care packages containing movies we?watched with letters. ?It gives us something else to talk about out here?other than work."

With every installation not the same, Soldiers must bond?together to take care of each other and accomplish the mission.

"We have to do what we can to get by out here," said Flett.?"Being out here makes you grateful to be able to walk to, and buy, the?simple things. ?When we go back home, I won't take it for granted."

Sgt. Daniel Schroeder is the?Public Affairs NCO for the?25th Combat Aviation Brigade

Banish ?I Love You, Too? + 9 More Relationship Commandments To ...

Whether you?ve written them down or not, you probably have some relationship commandments of your own. What are yours? Send them to lauren@howaboutwe.com.

1

There?s no such thing as cold feet?if you don?t want to marry him or her now, what makes you think you?ll want to be married to him or her for decades to come?

2

Relationships are not for winning, which means there is no happily ever after. There is only whether you are good for each other now ? and now ? and now ? You have to stay vigilant to stay in a good relationship.

3

Tell your partner the minute you feel angry, stifled, ignored, or neglected?if you don?t, the resentment will only build, and build, and build. If you do, you?ll likely both end up understanding each other better, having a good cry, or having a good laugh.

4

Don?t fret about what you did ?wrong? if you break up or are otherwise rejected. If they don?t love you the way you are, there?s no point.

5

In fact, anything causing too much trouble could be a sign that it?s just not right. Nobody loses a truly good relationship just because they didn?t follow the right self-help book advice or buy the right sexy underwear.

6

Banish ?I love you, too.? It should be a genuine expression, not a routine call-and-response, so make a deal with your partner: Whenever one of you says it, the other just acknowledges it with a kiss.

7

Announce when you need alone time, and accept when your partner does the same. It?s just a fact of life, not an indictment of your relationship.

8

Announce your bad moods. It?s better than snapping at your partner as if it?s his or her fault.

Common Parasite Linked to Personality Changes

Toxoplasma gondii in a human cell.

Image: KLAUS BOLLER Photo Researchers, Inc.

Feeling sociable or reckless? You might have toxoplasmosis, an infection caused by the microscopic parasite Toxoplasma gondii, which the CDC estimates has infected about 22.5 percent of Americans older than 12 years old. Researchers tested participants for T. gondii infection and had them complete a personality questionnaire. They found that both men and women infected with T. gondii were more extroverted and less conscientious than the infection-free participants. These changes are thought to result from the parasite's influence on brain chemicals, the scientists write in the May/June issue of the European Journal of Personality.

?Toxoplasma manipulates the behavior of its animal host by increasing the concentration of dopamine and by changing levels of certain hormones,? says study author Jaroslav Flegr of Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic.

Although humans can carry the parasite, its life cycle must play out in cats and rodents. Infected mice and rats lose their fear of cats, increasing the chance they will be eaten, so that the parasite can then reproduce in a cat's body and spread through its feces [see ?Protozoa Could Be Controlling Your Brain,? by Christof Koch, Consciousness Redux; Scientific American Mind, May/June 2011].

In humans, T. gondii's effects are more subtle; the infected population has a slightly higher rate of traffic accidents, studies have shown, and people with schizophrenia have higher rates of infection?but until recent years, the parasite was not thought to affect most people's daily lives.

In the new study, a pattern appeared in infected men: the longer they had been infected, the less conscientious they were. This correlation supports the researchers' hypothe-sis that the personality changes are a result of the parasite, rather than personality influencing the risk of infection. Past studies that used outdated personality surveys also found that toxoplasmosis-related personality changes increased with the length of infection.

T. gondii is most commonly contracted through exposure to undercooked contaminated meat (the rates of infection in France are much higher than in the U.S.), unwashed fruits or vegetables from contaminated soil, and tainted cat litter. The parasite is the reason pregnant women are advised not to clean litter boxes: T. gondii can do much more damage to the fetal brain than the personality tweak it inflicts on adults.

Twitter app Carbon leaves Windows Phone for Android

The developers of the Twitter client Carbon have announced that they are leaving the Windows Phone OS and will be releasing Carbon as an Android application.?M.Saleh Esmaeili, the man behind Carbon, wrote on his Google+ page that there were two reasons that Carbon for Windows Phone was no more. First he said, Carbon was never meant to be a cross-platform app and secondly, Windows Phone didn?t have enough users to warrant the ongoing development of the app.

Carbon was originally released as an app on the fabled WebOS platform and during the demise of WebOS, the team made the switch to Windows Phone. However the situation with Windows Phone 8 (existing devices will not be updated to WP8) and the lack of Windows Phone users meant the switch to Android had to happen.

Carbon will join a myriad of Twitter clients on the Google Play Store and despite ranking highly in the Windows Phone Store, it?s yet to be seen if they can replicate their success on Android.

Scientists reverse Alzheimer's-like memory loss in animal models by blocking EGFR signaling

ScienceDaily (Sep. 24, 2012) ? A team of neuroscientists and chemists from the U.S. and China September 24 publish research suggesting that a class of currently used anti-cancer drugs as well as several previously untested synthetic compounds show effectiveness in reversing memory loss in two animal models of Alzheimer's disease.

CSHL Professor Yi Zhong, Ph.D., who led the research conducted in fruit flies and mice, says he and his colleagues were surprised with their results, which, he stressed, used two independent experimental approaches "the results of which clearly converged."

Specifically, the research converged on what Zhong's team suggests is a "preferred target" for treating memory loss associated with the amyloid-beta (A?) plaques seen in advanced Alzheimer's patients. That target is the epidermal growth factor receptor, often called by its acronym, EGFR.

Overexpression of the EGFR is a characteristic feature of certain cancers, notably a subset of lung cancers. Two targeted treatments, erlotinib (Tarceva) and gefitinib (Iressa), can dramatically, albeit transiently, reverse EGFR-positive cancers, by blocking the EGF receptor and thus preventing its activation.

The newly published research by Zhong's team suggests that the signaling within cells that is induced by EGFR activation also plays a role in the pathology -- still poorly understood -- involved in A?-associated memory loss seen in Alzheimer's patients.

Zhong and colleagues previously had studied A?-associated memory loss in fruit flies with brain cells expressing the A?-42 peptide (a specific version of the protein, composed of 42 amino acids, seen in Alzheimer's plaques). These fruit flies are regarded as models of the illness in part because the A?-42 they manifest is encoded by a human gene, inserted in their genome. In behavioral experiments, such flies have been shown to suffer memory deficiencies analogous to those seen in human Alzheimer's.

Enhanced activation of EGFR exacerbates memory loss in flies

In the current round of experiments, Zhong's team demonstrated that enhanced activation of EGFRs in brain cells exacerbated memory loss in the A?-42 fruit fly model of Alzheimer's disease. This led them to dose 3-day-old flies of this type with the two anti-cancer EGFR inhibitors over a week's time, which was shown in behavioral tests on day 11 to prevent memory loss. The results were then confirmed in mouse models of Alzheimer's, also based on the human A?-42 gene.

This was remarkable, but even more so, says Zhong, because of a parallel but independent experimental process that also suggested EGFR as a drug target for Alzheimer's. This parallel process consisted of screening, by Zhong's collaborators in China, of some 2,000 synthetic compounds for activity against A?-induced memory loss in model fruit flies. Of these, 45 compounds showed positive results in fruit flies after two months of dosing. Nine of these were selected for testing in mouse models, of which four showed positive results after two months.

"We were amazed to find that three of these compounds -- designated JKF-006, JKF-011 and JKF-027 -- not only showed effective results in rescuing memory loss in the mice, but also, in test-tube-based experiments prevented A?-42 from activating human EGFR," Zhong reports.

Blocking EGFR signaling appeared to prevent memory loss

Importantly, a precise mechanism could not be conclusively demonstrated from this and related experiments. But the available evidence leads the scientists to propose in a paper appearing online today in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, that reversal of memory loss occurs when clumps of beta-amyloid proteins are either prevented directly from "docking" with the human EGF receptor, or prevent phosphate groups from attaching to the receptor, a process called phosphorylation. Both hypothesized processes would prevent the initiation of the EGFR intracellular signaling cascade.

Zhong and colleagues note the uncertainty of Alzheimer's pathology. Memory loss stemming from A?-induced activation of EGFR "may reflect the acute toxic effects of A?, which might be independent of synaptic and neuronal degeneration," they note. To gain more insight, the team tested drug treatment of middle-aged mice (8 months old) with advanced memory loss during an 18-day period -- some six weeks shorter than the dosing period initially shown to be effective.

"Eighteen days -- the shortest dosing period we tested -- was sufficient to reverse loss in these mice, although we should note that these animals had few morphological changes in the brain despite their severe memory loss when treatment began," Zhong says.

Because of the positive results they obtained in reversing memory loss in animal models, the team suggests additional testing with EGFR inhibitors be conducted, as well as testing of "behaviorally screened chemicals in treatments of Alzheimer's patients."

Gynecologic Cancer is actually a grouping of several different types of cancer that affect women. The tissues and organs that are targeted by gynecologic cancer are portions of a females reproductive system. This includes cervical cancer, uterine cancer, fallopian tube cancer, vulvar cancer, vaginal cancer, and ovarian cancer.Although any woman is potentially at risk for developing female (gynecological) cancer, certain factors can increase the likelihood of developing this disease. Smoking, obesity, high blood pressure, HPV infection, and the use of particular medications (such as certain types of birth control medications) can increase a womans odds of developing gynecologic cancer. Because heredity plays a role, women with a family history of cancer have a higher probability of getting this disease.Even though we all know how crucial early detection is when dealing with a potentially life threatening illness, no one likes to consider the fact that they might have a deadly disease. However, if you experience any of these warning signs and symptoms, you need to speak with your healthcare provider in order to find out the cause.Pelvic pain or pressure. Any type of pelvic pain or pressure should be taken very seriously. Report any abnormal vaginal, urinary tract, or anal bleeding to your doctor as soon as possible.Abnormal discharge. Inform your gynecologist about any changes from your normal vaginal discharge.Any sore that does not heal. If you have a sore that either doesnt heal or that heals very slowly, let your doctor know.Continual feeling of fullness. If you have trouble eating because you already feel full, or experience the feeling of fullness soon after you begin eating, inform your healthcare provider.Changes in bathroom habits. Changes in your normal bladder (frequency or urgency) or bowel patterns (including nausea, diarrhea, gas, and indigestion) that last longer than 2 weeks should be reported to your doctor.Unintended weight changes. If you suddenly lose weight without dieting or exercise, or unexpectedly begin to gain weight for no apparent reason, let your doctor know.Low back pain. Although many non-cancerous conditions can cause low back pain, pain in the low back can sometimes indicate a problem with the ovaries or uterus. Only a doctor can tell for certain.Other signs include: Skin color changes, burning pain in the genital region, and abdominal bloating.Have annual physicals, routine gynecologic examinations, and pap tests in order to safeguard yourself against the dangers of cancer. Speak with your doctor about any unusual changes that you may be experiencing, especially if you have one or several of the above warning signs of gynecologic cancer.

Baby Shower #1 Recap | Conventional Bliss

Now that both baby showers have come and gone; I figured it would be a good time (since I?ve been lagging on the baby/preggo posts this past week) on doing a brief recap of both showers.

This one will be quicker to write, since the photos from my shower last weekend are DSLR huge-annoying-but better quality pics that I won?t get a chance to upload ?til the wknd!

Anywho, last month, when I was about 27/8 weeks along, my MIL obliged us and threw us a wonderful family baby shower with Mr.Dubs? extended family up in Bay City (where MIL/FIL grew up, met, and still own their first home!)

She rented out a school building?s cafeteria and while she was afraid that the ?no air conditioning? might cause a problem? it worked out perfectly, because the day was beautiful with a slight cool breeze coming through the windows! :)

Mr.Dubs was such a good sport and joined me for the shower. I?m not a huge fan of showers or having the spotlight in any situation. He did a really great job of making me feel comfortable and introduced me to long-lost relatives that he hadn?t seen in years either. :)

(Sorry for the bad cut off, I think that?s FIL?s cousin?)

Mr.Dubs, MIL, Me, & FIL

Mr.Dubs? cousin Kayla

Mr.Dubs? Cousin?s Daughter, Ella<3

All in all, I survived without a panic attack (yep I get nervous)! And we ate a ton of good food and got see lots of aunts/uncles/cousins that we don?t get to see all too often. And of course, people were so generous? we made out with a TON of baby gear for our Lil? One!<3

I mean, seriously, a TON of stuff:

Happy Friday everyone!<3

iPhone 5 photo gallery

iPhone 5 photo gallery

The iPhone 5 isn't just one of the most advanced pieces of consumer electronics ever made, Apple has taken the design and manufacturing itself well beyond the next level. Measured now in microns, the precision is as impressive as it is ephemeral -- easily seen in the fit and finish of every part up close, but disappearing instantly when you start using it, when it just becomes the phone, internet communicator, or widescreen iPod in your hand.

So lets take a moment to appreciate the iPhone 5 as object, as a piece of industrial design, as the craftsman of Apple and Jonathan Ive and Bob Mansfield and their teams, as a thing of beauty.
