Studies report early childhood trauma takes visible toll on brain

ScienceDaily (Oct. 16, 2012) ? Trauma in infancy and childhood shapes the brain, learning, and behavior, and fuels changes that can last a lifetime, according to new human and animal research released today. The studies delve into the effects of early physical abuse, socioeconomic status (SES), and maternal treatment. Documenting the impact of early trauma on brain circuitry and volume, the activation of genes, and working memory, researchers suggest it increases the risk of mental disorders, as well as heart disease and stress-related conditions in adulthood.

The findings were presented at Neuroscience 2012, the annual meeting of the Society for Neuroscience and the world's largest source of emerging news about brain science and health.

Today's findings show:

• Physical abuse in early childhood may realign communication between key "body-control" brain areas, possibly predisposing adults to cardiovascular disease and mental health problems (Layla Banihashemi, PhD, abstract 691.12).
• Rodent studies provide insight into brain changes that allow tolerance of pain within mother-pup attachment (Regina Sullivan, PhD, abstract 399.19).
• Childhood poverty is associated with changes in working memory and attention years later in adults; yet training in childhood is associated with improved cognitive functions (Eric Pakulak, PhD, abstract 908.04).
• Chronic stress experienced by infant primates leads to fearful and aggressive behaviors; these are associated with changes in stress hormone production and in the development of the amygdala (Mar Sanchez, PhD, abstract 691.10).

Another recent finding discussed shows that:

• Parent education and income is associated with children's brain size, including structures important for memory and emotion (Suzanne Houston, MA).

"While we are becoming fully aware, in general, of the devastating impact that early life adversity has on the developing brain, today's findings reveal specific changes in targeted brain regions and the long-lasting nature of these alterations," said press conference moderator Bruce McEwen, PhD, from The Rockefeller University, an expert on stress and its effects on early brain development. "In doing so, this research points not only to new directions for the improved detection and treatment of resulting cognitive impairment, mental health disorders, and chronic diseases, but also emphasizes the importance of preventing early life abuse and neglect in the first place."

This research was supported by national funding agencies, such as the National Institutes of Health, as well as private and philanthropic organizations.

Angelos bankrolling comptroller's lawsuit against mayor

Prominent lawyer and Orioles' owner Peter G. Angelos is bankrolling Comptroller Joan M. Pratt's lawsuit against the administration of Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake over efforts to install a new city phone system that Pratt says illegally circumvented the competitive bidding process and wasted taxpayer dollars.

"Mr. Angelos is a very public-spirited citizen who always looks out for the little guy," said Pratt's attorney, Charles Bernstein of the Angelos firm, which is representing Pratt pro bono. "In this case, the little guy is the Baltimore taxpayer. Mr. Angelos is very concerned with a clean, open government. Ms. Pratt came to him about this matter, and he told me to try to help her out."

Pratt filed a lawsuit Friday seeking to stop Rawlings-Blake's technology office from installing a new phone system, alleging the administration used an "underhanded, illegal technique" to bypass the competitive bidding process.

Ryan O'Doherty, a spokesman for Rawlings-Blake, said Angelos' involvement is not surprising.

"The firm has provided legal services to many organizations that have sued or are suing the City of Baltimore so it's not at all surprising and shouldn't be read into too much," he said.

Angelos' firm is involved in lawsuits challenging the State Center and Superblock redevelopment plans.

Pratt's suit seeks a temporary restraining order against the Rawlings-Blake administration to prevent the Mayor's Office of Information Technology from using existing contracts with Digicon Corp. to install a Voice over Internet Protocol phone system. The administration and Pratt's office have both been working to install such a system, leading to a City Hall turf war.

"I've been very concerned about the waste of taxpayer dollars," Pratt said in an interview Friday. "In order to stop the waste of further taxpayer dollars, I felt the need to take this action."

O'Doherty said Pratt is wasting city resources by engaging in a legal fight over a matter that should be handled through collaboration among the branches of city government.

"The Office of Information Technology has been trying for more than a month to meet with the comptroller's office to work on a collaborative solution," he said. "Any court action is an unnecessary waste of time and resources and is completely ill-advised."

Baltimore's Board of Estimates, which is controlled by Rawlings-Blake, rejected a $7.4 million contract with IBM for a new phone system in July. Pratt said that IBM was the lowest bidder and should have been awarded the contract.

Meanwhile, the mayor's office contends it had the right to buy equipment for a VoIP project under an existing contract with Digicon. Another contract with Digicon provided staffing. Voice over Internet Protocol systems allow calls to be placed through the Internet rather than on traditional phone lines and are considered more efficient.

In her lawsuit, Pratt contends Digicon didn't participate in the bidding process in which IBM emerged as the winner, and therefore shouldn't be allowed to continue work on implementing the new phone system.

"The charter dictates that if the city is to award a contract, it must go only to the highest scoring proposal," Pratt's suit states. "In this case to the severe detriment of the taxpayers of Baltimore City and to the law as set forth in the charter, a lucrative contract has been given to Digicon which not only failed to submit the 'highest scoring' response, but failed to respond at all."

Digicon "received the work by the underhanded, illegal technique of using two preexisting Requirements Contracts ... which were in no way relevant," the lawsuit states.

Pratt said recently she refuses to meet with the mayor's new Chief Information Officer Chris Tonjes until she meets with Rawlings-Blake. She said she has been trying to meet with the mayor for weeks.

"He is not my peer," she said of Tonjes.

Pratt's lawsuit was filed Friday in Baltimore City Circuit Court. A hearing date has not been set.

An investigation by the city's inspector general into the Rawlings-Blake administration's purchase of nearly $675,000 in phone and computer equipment found possible conflicts of interest and missed opportunities for "significant cost savings." The report was released in September.

Inspector General David N. McClintock also found that the mayor's technology office withheld information from other city officials about the project. For example, the report said a former deputy mayor directed another city employee to mislead City Council President Bernard C. "Jack" Young by denying that the mayor's office was taking steps to upgrade the city's phone system.

McClintock said in an interview that his probe found no illegalities.

The mayor's technology office failed to get multiple quotes when buying equipment, which could have yielded savings, McClintock wrote. He also wrote that two key managers charged with implementing the new system were contractors or subcontractors with Digicon, which has offices in Rockville. One of them was allowed to commit city resources "in a way that financially benefited Digicon."

Administration officials took issue with some of the report's findings and said the equipment was purchased inexpensively. In a statement, the mayor's office contended that the technology purchases were "neither out of the ordinary nor in violation of law," citing an opinion by the city solicitor.

Rawlings-Blake has "made ethics a top priority of her administration," according to a statement.

The administration also noted that it has already worked to "significantly tighten controls on the City's electronic procurement system to ensure that all purchasing procedures and guidelines are strictly adhered to."

Is this the Sony Nexus X?

It looks like a few images of the Sony Nexus X have recently leaked. Or, well, some images of a handset claiming to be the Nexus X have leaked. We say claiming because we remain a bit skeptical. The images, of which there are two have come by way of Picasa user Mutel Yeter, who just so happens to have only posted those two images on his account. The Nexus X, which has also been referred to as the Xperia Nexus in the past appears to have the styling of a Sony handset. Not to mention, the Google branding that is centered on the backside. And looking at the display pic, that would seem to be a stock Android installation. Of course, given all we have is the picture, that could be nothing more than an image. Anyway, time will tell just how accurate this will prove to be, but in the meantime, there were those rumors of Nexus handsets coming from multiple manufacturers this time around.

Memphis musician killed while helping co-worker

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) ? Memphis musician B.B. Cunningham scored with a classic garage rock song and toured with Jerry Lee Lewis, but he also enjoyed his side job as a security guard because he liked standing up for other people. On Sunday, he died doing just that.

Cunningham co-wrote the 1967 hit "Let It Out (Let It All Hang Out)" for his band the Hombres and toured more recently with Lewis. The 70-year-old keyboardist, bassist and singer's other job as a uniformed security guard provided a steady paycheck, his son said.

He was shot and killed over the weekend after he came to the aid of another security guard during a shootout at the Memphis apartment complex where they worked, police said Monday.

The gunfire began when a 16-year-old boy and a 22-year-old man fired shots at the other guard, police said. After hearing the shots, Cunningham began chasing the teen and the man into another apartment complex nearby, police said.

After another round of gunfire, Cunningham's co-worker found the musician and the teen lying in a courtyard with gunshot wounds.

Cunningham and the teen, identified Monday as Henry White, were pronounced dead on the scene.

Police identified the 22-year-old gunman as Dock Britt. He fled the scene but was later was arrested and charged with first-degree murder in Cunningham's death. Investigators are still trying to determine who shot White.

The shooting shook Memphis musicians, many of whom looked up to the keyboardist who joined Jerry Lee Lewis' band in 1997. He had had also been working on an album with his son.

Joseph Cunningham, the musician's son, acknowledges that a regular paycheck was one reason why his father worked as a security guard.

"Most of Jerry Lee's band, as a matter of fact, have jobs on the side because Jerry doesn't tour consistently enough for them to make a living at it," Joseph Cunningham said.

The former Air Force military police officer also had an interest in helping others, doing charity work and looking after those who lived in the apartment complex.

"He loved protecting people and standing up for people's rights and watching their back," Joseph Cunningham said.

Other prominent Memphis musicians who died this year include Memphis Horns tenor saxophonist Andrew Love and Booker T. and the MGs bassist Donald "Duck" Dunn.

"Music was his life. He was given a God-given talent," Joseph Cunningham told in a phone interview from Olive Branch, Miss. "He not only played, but he helped young musicians ... He was loved and well-respected."

Born Blake Baker Cunningham Jr., B.B. Cunningham became friends in high school with Steve Cropper and Dunn, both founding members of Booker T. and the MGs.

As a teenager, Cunningham helped run the family's record label. In 1954, Sun Studio producer Sam Phillips asked Cunningham to add some percussion to a session by a young Elvis Presley.

Cunningham led the band the Six O'Clock Boys and was a member of the touring version of Ronnie and the Daytonas, known for the song "G.T.O."

The touring group then became the Hombres, which scored a No. 12 hit on Billboard's Hot 100 chart in 1967 with the raw, edgy "Let It Out (Let It All Hang Out)." The cult classic has been covered by John Mellencamp and used in the 2005 film "Elizabethtown."

Cunningham later work at the famed Sounds of Memphis Studio and, in 1971, moved to Los Angeles, where he served as chief engineer at Independent Recorders. There, he worked with Billy Joel, Elton John, and Lou Rawls.

Cunningham returned to Memphis a few years later and launched his own studio. His solo album, "Hangin' In," was released in 2003.

Eldorado Del Rey, a musician who also works at Sun Studio in Memphis, said Cunningham would visit Sun Studio often to say hello and have a cup of coffee.

"He was awesome, I loved him," said Del Rey. "He was kind of meditative, but then he would tell you a really funny story."

Chuckling, fiery Biden sets stage for Obama recovery

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Joe Biden's spirited performance in the vice presidential debate has some critics panning him for over-the-top chuckles and snide grins, but it set the stage for President Barack Obama to regain his footing during a rematch with Republican challenger Mitt Romney next week.

After Obama was seen as largely passive against a resurgent Romney last week in the first primetime debate before the November 6 election, Biden fired up the Democratic base by aggressively challenging his opponent Paul Ryan on taxes, healthcare and foreign policy.

Post-debate polls put Thursday night's matchup largely at a draw.

Obama now has a chance to dial back from Biden's sarcastic smiles and mocking quips, and deliver his own vigorous argument for why he should get a second term in the White House.

Democratic U.S. Representative Chris Van Hollen, who helped Biden prepare, said he expected Obama to come out swinging during the town-hall style debate on Tuesday.

"I think the president will be more aggressive in terms of the facts. After all, in the last debate the president essentially listened as Mitt Romney reinvented himself and Mitt Romney reinvented all their proposals," Van Hollen said on MSNBC on Friday.

The Democrats had looked to Biden to stop the bleeding after Romney's forceful performance gave him a surge in the polls less than a month before Election Day.

The veteran vice president, 69, scored points on the youthful Wisconsin congressman with a fiery delivery that highlighted his experience in foreign policy and hit hard on domestic issues.

Ryan largely met his challenge of trying to show he was knowledgeable, presidential, and that Romney had not made a mistake in making the 42-year-old his running mate.

The two campaigns both claimed victory.

"Most people who saw last night saw Paul Ryan as someone who had a command of the facts, had a clear, positive agenda for the future, and someone who's very serious about the serious issues that we face as country," Republican advisor Ed Gillespie said on MSNBC's "Morning Joe."

Gillespie did seize on Biden's comments about the security at the consulate in Benghazi, Libya, where U.S. ambassador Christopher Stevens was killed on September 11.

When asked about whether the mission had asked for more security during the months leading up to the attack, Biden said, "Well, we weren't told they wanted more security again. We did not know they wanted more security again."

The comments appeared to conflict with statements from a U.S. security officer who said he twice asked his State Department superiors for more security agents.

"There's a clear contradiction," Gillespie said.

ROMNEY GRABS THE LEAD

Romney advanced to take a small lead in many national opinion polls after the first debate on October 3, reversing what had been a small but growing advantage for Obama since the Democratic convention in early September.

The former Massachusetts governor also gained ground in polls of the closely contested "swing states" that will decide the election, although Obama stayed ahead in most.

Greg Valliere, who analyzes politics for investors at Potomac Research Group, said he thought Ryan "won on points," but that Biden energized the Democrats and stopped the slide.

"This entertaining debate was all about Biden, who easily cleared a low bar," Valliere said in a note to clients on Friday.

Biden strongly questioned many of the Republicans' policies. He pounced upon Romney's Byzantine tax returns, the Republican's suggestion to let U.S. automakers go bankrupt, his proposal to let struggling homeowners lose their houses, and his dismissal of 47 percent of the public as unproductive parasites.

Republicans panned Biden, faulting him for smiling too much and, they said, being rude to Ryan during their animated encounter. But Ryan also seemed to smirk, employing a boyish head tilt and a smile melting into a frown at both ends.

Some viewers thought Ryan lacked the fire necessary to win hearts.

"I expected Ryan to fight harder. He wasn't aggressive enough when he was constantly interrupted," said Scott Preston, a small business owner in Columbus, Ohio, who expressed concern that the Republican nominees are becoming too moderate.

One key observer gave Biden an unflinchingly positive review.

Obama watched the Biden-Ryan clash on board Air Force One as he returned from a day of campaigning in Miami.

"I thought Joe Biden was terrific tonight. I could not be prouder of him. I think he made a very strong case," Obama told reporters as he headed back to the White House.
